What's actually different
A traditional split system cools with refrigerant and heats with electric resistance strips (or a gas furnace). A heat pump uses the same refrigerant loop to move heat in both directions — cool in summer, warm in winter — without burning anything.
Where heat pumps win
- Mild winters (our average January low is in the 40s — heat-pump territory)
- 3–4x more efficient than electric resistance heat
- Single system to maintain instead of two
- Qualifies for federal efficiency tax credits and utility rebates
Where a traditional AC + gas furnace still makes sense
- Homes that already have gas service and a working furnace
- Long stretches below freezing (not us)
- Homeowners who prefer the 'hot' air feel of combustion heat
The real question: sizing
The bigger mistake we see isn't the type — it's the size. An oversized system short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and dies young. Get a Manual J load calculation before you buy anything. If a contractor quotes a tonnage by walking through the house in five minutes, walk them out.
